Description
Sikkim is a landlocked Indian state nestled in the Himalayan mountains. Despite its small size, Sikkim boasts remarkable geographical diversity attributed to its Himalayan location. Its climate ranges from subtropical to high alpine, and the world’s third-highest peak, Kangchenjunga, stands proudly on Sikkim’s border with Nepal. Renowned for its rich culture, breathtaking scenery, and abundant biodiversity, Sikkim has emerged as a favored tourist destination. Notably, it shares the only open land border between India and China.
Legend has it that the Buddhist saint Guru Rinpoche visited Sikkim in the 8th century AD, introducing Buddhism and prophesying the era of monarchy. The Namgyal dynasty was established in 1642, enduring raids and territorial losses to Nepalese invaders over the subsequent 150 years. In the 19th century, Sikkim forged an alliance with British rulers of India but was ultimately annexed by them. It later became a British protectorate before amalgamating with India following a referendum on abolishing the monarchy in 1975.
With an ethnic Nepali majority, Sikkim stands as the only state in India with such demographic dominance. The primary religions practiced are Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism. The state’s economy heavily relies on agriculture and tourism. As of 2011, Sikkim possesses the fourth-smallest GDP among Indian states, yet it is among the fastest-growing economies in the country.
