Uttar Pradesh, or UP, literally means the northern province. It is the most populous state of India and the fourth largest state in terms of area. Uttar Pradesh constitutes more than one-eighth of India and forms its heartland, covering an area of 294,413 square kilometers. The region has been central to much of India’s contemporary religious and cultural life. It is home to the sacred river Ganga, regarded by many Hindus as the physical and spiritual life source of the country. Lucknow serves as the capital of Uttar Pradesh, situated along the banks of the Gomti river in the heart of eastern UP.
Uttar Pradesh boasts some of the most renowned tourist destinations in India. Agra, the city of the Taj Mahal; Varanasi, one of the oldest cities in the world located on the banks of the Ganges; Haridwar, a significant religious city; Allahabad, where the grand Kumbh Mela is held; and Mathura, situated on the banks of the Yamuna river and considered the birthplace of Lord Krishna, are among the notable places to visit.
